Flickr have just released a new embed feature. Blogger beware! Because although I can see some good things about it, if you use Flickr to host your blog images, you have to pay attention to what code you use.
I’m going to use the photo above as an example.
Before the new feature, when you used the (HTML) embed code on your blog, you would see something like this when hovering your mouse over the image. A few details about the photo and the creator of the photo. Nice and clean.
This is what happens if you hover over an image where you use the new (iframe) code. Lots of information going on! Imposed on the image, so if you’ve got anything along the bottom edge, it will be obscured by all that stuff. And those arrows mean that you can click through other Flickr photos right there on the blog. That may be a good thing if you’re using the image as more of a gallery feature, but in a blog post I think it’s unnecessary and distracting.
And another thing, the iframe code means that the image may not show up in your RSS reader, like Bloglovin, Feedly or whatever.
Luckily, the old HTML code is still there!
When you go to copy the HTML code for your image, make sure you check the HTML radio button, not the ‘Embed’ one. (In case you’re wondering he BBCode option is for use on forums.)
I was in a bit of a huff when I noticed that one of my recent posts had that embed version of an image. But after a wee search on the Flickr site I figured out why it was happening. Phew. Problem solved. ;-)
