Brave enough to sell things

One Of A Kind

There are some new things in my shop. But that’s not the only thing this post is about.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. You see, I don’t oftern make things to sell. Embroidery is time consuming and to ask a decent price for it.. well, that makes it expensive. That’s just the way it is.

And to be really, really honest with you, when you make something, putting your heart and soul (not to mention a lot of time and effort) into it, and then have people complain that it’s too expensive.. that’s a little heartbreaking.

If you are a maker of things, I’m sure you have been there!

It makes me sad that a lot of people don’t respect the work we do. Just because it is creative and enjoyable (most of the time), that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get a decent pay for what we make. Creative people have bills to pay too, right?

Embroidery is comparatively slow work and so the price is comparatively high. Atleast if the embroiderer wants to make a half way decent hourly rate. And that’s one reason I don’t often make things to sell. My time is simply better spent doing other things.

Another reason I don’t make thing to sell is that.. it feels very vulnerable. With all the effort and heart you put in, if no one buys what you make, that feels like a rejection. It can even make you feel like what you make isn’t good enough. Like you’re not good enough. That’s a really negative feeling. And a very un-productive, un-creative feeling.

I want to make what I do in a positive mindset, not in one where I am fearing rejection or that I will feel like I am not good enough.

I feel vulnerable even talking about this… putting my fears out there for all to see. Because.. ugh. Someone’s going to think.. well.. I guess, they’ll think I am weak ‘coz it’s not all positive over here. Not that it’s negative, but you know. ‘Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.’ Or something.

Anyway, I want to try and get over this particular fear of mine, so I have indeed put some things in my shop which I have made with own hands (probably while wearing a crazy colour of nail polish!) in a category I call One of A Kind.

And I will add more, little by little. At the moment, there are a few projects from my book as well as some other things.
