Clothes to Coverlet

Over on YouTube I shared a video about this finished patchwork project. There are also a couple of other videos about it: Oops, I Started Another Quilt! and How To Quilt This Triangles Quilt?

The pattern is from Wise Craft Quilts by Blair Stocker. I have made two other projects from that book. I really like it. It is one of a handful of quilting books that live in my little studio on a permanent basis. :-)

When I started the project, I think I was intending that it would become a quilt, but in the end it is “just” a blanket/coverlet.

The top is mostly made from items of clothing that I made myself, but haven’t worn in a long time, so I thought it was time to put them to another use. I didn’t want to give them to a charity shop because I don’t think my dress making skills are up to giving other people what I have made…

I went back to check when I started working on this project. I thought it was in November last year, while Blake was recovering from an operation on his eye. Or atleast that is when I recall that I started working on it. Sitting on the floor, with a small cutting mat balancing on a shoe box, and cutting all the triangles. But I did actually start the project in September. Weird that I don’t remember it that way…

It was quite the challenge to lay out the triangles. More so than squares! And since I do not have space for a large quilt wall, I had to do it on our bed. So I couldn’t just leave it until the next day while I made up my mind about the layout!

I think it turned out ok. There are a couple of places where the same fabric is multiple times in a row or close to each other. But it’s fine.

Some top stitching to hold the two layers together. On the right hand side you can just get a taste of how a lot of the triangles lost their points in the sewing together process. Which meant that the top stitching is a bit wonky here and there. But I don’t mind. Once it’s in use no one’s going to notice. :-)

The finished blanket. Despite the wonkiness, I am quite happy with how it turned out. I think it has a nice sort of faded look.

I gave the blanket to my parents because to be quite honest, we have more than enough quilts and blankets*. I thought they might take it to their caravan but it sounds like they have kept it at home in stead.

*That won’t stop me from making more, though! :-D
