Happy Little Squares

Earlier this year I shared that I was going to make a replica of the quilt in Phil’s b&b bedroom in the film Groundhog Day.

In January I made a pattern for the quilt and I also made this test section of the quilt. Later on I also made a test with slightly smaller squares because I thought the squares in the first test were too big. But in the end I settled on the larger size.

In November I finally made a start on the actual quilt top:

Lots of little squares in happy colours! My quilt will not have the exact type of fabrics as in the film quilt. For that to happen, I would have had to go out and buy a lot of vintage style floral fabrics! Instead I am making a quilt that has the vibe I interpret from the film quilt: the fabrics reflects the maker’s scraps collected over many years, decades probably.

And that is mostly what the fabrics are in my quilt! With a few fabrics I did buy specifically for this project, to fill colour gaps in my stash. But I have gone really deep in my stash. Using some fabrics that have been waiting for a ‘special’ project or favourites that were too precious to be used so they have sat in the fabric cabinet for almost 20 years!

After Christmas I am going to get back to work on the project. After all, I want to finish it by Groundhog Day!
