Orange Log Cabin Quilt

For years I have wanted to make a quilt for my sister. For logistical reasons it just hasn’t been possible: it’s really expensive to send a quilt to the US; whenever I have seen her in person she has been travelling with carry on luggage and you can’t get a decent sized quilt in that!

But earlier this year an opportunity presented itself. About a month before we were due to go to Copenhagen, where we would also be seeing my parents, my mum told me that they were going to the US for Christmas. I am not a fast quilter so could I make a quilt for my sister in about three weeks?

Yes, I could! It was pretty much all consuming but I did it! And here is the quilt held aloft by Tony in the main train station in Copenhagen!

The quilt is really bright! All those orange prints and colours, with a bit of pink and green. You can’t look at it and not feel at least a tiny bit happier. I loved working on this. All those prints…just so joyful. I had to dive really deep in my stash to find enough suitable fabrics because I don’t actually have a lot of orange. In the end I did have to order a handful of orange fat quarters to add a bit of variety.

The back of the quilt is a duvet cover which wasn’t my first choice but I’m glad my first choice wasn’t available because I think this back is perfect with the front. The green and white wasn’t quite big enough so I had to enlarge it with the orange and pink pillow case. Which I think also works really nicely, it ties the front and back together, colour wise.

A corner of the front of the quilt is folded over onto the back which is made from a fabric with large white leaves on a green background and a wide strip of white fabric with large leaves in pink and orange.

So happy with this combination. And you can just see on the front corner that the binding is this delicious green colour but with a section where I used three strips of fabric used in the quilt. Just a fun little detail. :-)

The quilting is quite simple. I drew a grid on point and then I quilted about an inch from the lines of the grid. I like when the quilting is on point like this, it makes it stand out a bit more.

As you can imagine, I was very excited about seeing my sister open (via video call) her present. I am happy to report that she loves it. :-D

I made a video about the quilt while I was working on it, you can watch it below or click this link.

The quilt is stunningly gorgeous! The fabrics are delicious! Wonderful choices and great balance of colour and sizing of the blocks. I sure hope your sister loved it. Your video was not only relaxing but inspiring to watch.
