Hexagon Quilt Update

This feels like a momentous occasion: the other day I started sewing together section one and two in my hexagon quilt top! I made a little video to mark the occasion. :-)

I originally started making a hexagon quilt top, using only Denyse Schmidt fabrics, in 2013. But I didn’t really have a plan for it so it never really got anywhere. I think I picked it up in 2017 but again, not much progress was made. I think then I sort of gave up on it. It seemed like a lot of hand stitching that would take ages.

But then in 2023 I got inspired to work on it again and I have been doing it ever since. Just a little bit of stitching every day. First I spent a year or so making a lot of hexagons and on January 1st, 2025, I started sewing the hexagons together in sections. I have to work in sections because I don’t have a design wall where I can lay out larger sections.

Maybe it’s good that I have to work in smaller sections so I won’t get overwhelmed. Small sections, worked at a leisurely pace. I try to work on the quilt top a little bit every day so I keep the momentum going. Usually in the evening. I’ll go upstairs and sit in the spare bedroom and watch something “boring” (according to Tony!) while I stitch away. It is actually a nice way to end the day. :-)

What will I do in the evenings once I eventually finish the quilt?! :-D
