Blake in White And Black

Indoor photo of a large black picture frame on a white wall. In the picture frame is a white chalk drawing on a black background. The drawing is a bunch of tulips in a vase.

If you have read this blog for a while (a very long while indeed), there is a teeny tiny chance that you remember this tulip drawing I did way back in 2011? But probably not. Why would you remember that?! :-D

Anyway, for some time (years!) I have been meaning to draw something else on the chalkboard. I just didn’t know what. But when we had to say goodbye to Blake last year, then I suddenly knew exactly what I wanted to draw. It just took me a little while to…be ready, I guess.

Over the years, I drew Blake many times. I don’t think I have a single sketchbook where he doesn’t appear atleast once. It was strange to draw him from a photo.

Outdoor photo. A small white dog with black ears and face markings is siting in a patch of buttercups. He is wearing a blue and black harness. He is the best boy in the whole world.

This is the photo I used. My sweet boy. I miss stroking those silky soft ears…

Anyway. It was quite tricky to draw him in chalk on the chalkboard. I have always drawn him in black, or some other colour, on a white background. I had to re-think how to draw him. Lessons have been learnt! :-)

Here is the final drawing:

It’s not a masterpiece by any definition but it does look like Blake and that is all I was hoping for. Now he is on the wall in the kitchen and that makes me happy.

I recorded a video of the drawing process. You can watch it here if you like. :-)
